CZ

On his tour over hackerspaces of Central and East Europe, Mitch Altman will also stop by at Prague! Mitch is american enterpreneur and inventor, VR pioneer in the past, founder of the San Francisco hackerspace, currently best known by his TV-B-GONE device. In Prague, he will hold a workshop and a talk: the workshop will be focused on soldering basics and practical introduction to construction of simple but useful electronic devices (see below); the exact topic of the talk will depend on the preference of the public (see below for possible topics).

  • Place: lecture room in the building of Katastralni urad Praha-Kobylisy (metro line C, station Kobylisy), take a lift to 6th floor. Room has capatity about 80 people. Come on time. No more visitors will be passed inside in case of full capacity.
  • Open to everyone interested in learning basic eletronics, especially complete beginners!
  • Entrance fee: voluntary; if you want to join us with building some devices based Mitch's kits in the second part of the workshop, it is neccessary to buy it for between 10 to 30 dollars per kit (most are $20). Also brmlab t-shirts (cca 200Kč) and probably other stuff will be available to buy.
  • If possible, bring your own soldering irons, sponge, wire cutters, solder, AA batteries, power strip
  • Organized by the brmlab hackerspace. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask at rada@brmlab.cz.

Please register on our registration form if you want to come.

The Workshop

In the first part of the workshop, we will learn some soldering basics.

In the second part, we will be building some nifty devices. There will be plenty of cool kits available to build, including:

  • TV-B-Gone (turn off TVs in public places!)
  • BRainMachine (Meditate, Hallucinate, and Trip Out!)
  • LEDCube (cool cube of blinky lights!)
  • Mignonette Game (play fun games!)
  • Trippy RGB Waves (interactive colored blinky lights!)
  • MiniPOV (more cool blinky lights!)
  • MintyBoost (charge your USB enabled gadgets!)

and for the more advanced:

  • Microcontroller programmers (program all your AVR family chips!)
  • Arduino clones (make just about anything!)
  • …and more. \o/

The workshop is best described by checking out what's been posted for previous workshops Mitch given:

Talk posibilities

Abstract is not strictly determined. Probably it will have workshop part and parts while we can choose from various subjects to talk about. Here's a few to choose from:

  • 5-minute Lightning talk: How I went from a depressed blob of a kid to a jet-setting, public-speaking inventor who loves my life
  • 60-minute (including Q&A): How to bring you project from idea to reality, and make a living on what you love
  • 60-minute (including Q&A): How to start a hackerspace
  • 60-minute (including Q&A): How to make cool things with microcontrollers (Microcontrollers 101)
  • 60-minute (including Q&A): TV-B-Gone, Life, and Media literacy
  • 60-minute (including Q&A): BRainMachine
